THE IMAMS (RELIGIOUS LEADERS)
1. IMAMATE: Universal authority in all religious and secular affairs of Ummah in succession to the Prophet (PBUH).
2. Khalifeh: means succession or successor to the Prophet (PBUH).
3. Wasi means “executor of the will” of the Prophet. Wasi is leader recommended by the Prophet (PBUH).
4. Marja-Taghlid: A religious leader who has all the credentials and has been chosen by the people who follow him and give him their Khoms and Zakat to promote Islam.

In Islamic Republic of Iran, Majlis Khobretehan (Council of Intellectuals) are a group of Ayatollahs and religious leaders who choose Wali Faghih (knowledgeable leader) (presently Ayatollah Ali Khomeini) for a lifetime. Wali Faghih is the head of the army and can override decisions made by the President or Congress if it is not compatible with the Quran and Sunnat.
In Iran, presidential candidates are confirmed by Majlis Khobregon first and then they go to the people and run for presidency. In Iran, the president has the power over the secular affair of the people and has to work with Congress to pass necessary laws. All laws have to be confirmed by Wali Faghih who is also head of the military forces too. In America, the president is the head of the Armed Forces. The three branches of government, presidency, congress, supreme court are independent. All legislation must be approved by the president and if the president vetoes it, then Congress can override the veto by two-thirds of the majority. If a legislation is passed by Congress and signed by the President, it still can be turned down by the Supreme Court if it is not constitutional.
